Australia looks set to hold its first major pro wrestling event in five years, with WWE officials reportedly closing in on a deal with the Western Australian Government.

With the company continuing to grow their global footprint with 2023 shows in Canada, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia and England, a potential return Down Under would be a major boost for both parties.

And with the likes of Rhea Ripley, Bronson Reed and Grayson Waller all finding success under the WWE umbrella, now could be the perfect time to come back to Australia.

WA Premier Mark McGowan has made no secret of his desire to bring major events to the state, with a recent UFC pay-per-view and upcoming national-exclusive Coldplay concert bringing in tourists from all over the country.

According to reports from both Fightful and Wrestling ObserverWWE officials recently toured the facilities at Optus Stadium and are considering bringing a premium live event (PLE) to Perth.

The Sporting News understands the event would likely be held in early-2024, potentially in February or March prior to WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.

Here's everything we know about WWE returning to Australia.

Is WWE returning to Australia?

WWE is reportedly in preliminary talks with the WA Government around a major event within the next year.

According to a report from Wrestling Observerthe talks have progressed past the expression of interest phase.

"The local tourism group co-promoting it has gotten more serious, as WWE officials went to Perth to discuss such a show," the report said.

In an interesting note, WWE recently cancelled their multi-city live event tour in Australia due to scheduling commitments. However, the email that was sent around to fans claimed that an "exciting new live event announcement" would be coming soon.

WWE have not toured Australia since 2019, while their last major event in the country was in October 2018, with the 'Super ShowDown' pay-per-view at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of 70,000 fans.

When is WWE coming to Australia?

At this stage, no formal announcement has been made regarding WWE returning to Australia, although government officials in WA are hopeful of locking in a major event.

The Sporting News understands the potential show would likely take place in late-February or early-March next year, prior to WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.
